Sudhir Suri, a Hindutva right wing leader, was shot dead in Amritsar on Friday, reports ndtv.com.
The leader of a local outfit using the name Shiv Sena, Suri was protesting outside a temple over a management dispute when he was shot at five times allegedly by a local shopkeeper.
The attacker was arrested immediately and the pistol seized, said local police commissioner, who did not divulge further. He appealed for peace "and not give in to any communal calls."
Suri had a police protection but the alleged killer landed at least two shots that killed him before he could be hospitalised.
Earlier on Thursday, Suri and his associates got into an argument with some men from the temple management, it is learnt.
