Shankar Mishra, of the infamous Air India ‘peegate’ fame, has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days which could be extended.

Anamika, the presiding magistrate at Delhi’s Patiala House Court, passed the order against Mishra, after he was produced before her on Saturday afternoon. Mishra had been arrested in Bangalore early on Saturday and brought to Delhi.

Mishra’s lawyers have filed a bail application which will be heard early next week. Till then he will be held in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

The 34-year-old former Wells Fargo executive appeared in court wearing two surgical masks to conceal his face. He was wearing a grey ski jacket and burgundy trousers and made his entry with a policeman gripping his hand. A horde of lawyers and reporters were present in the tiny court. He leaned against a wall looking nonchalant as his lawyer made the case in his favour.

Mishra is accused of urinating on a woman passenger in her 70s and the incident has created a huge furore and the police were on high alert to nab him. He was not at his house in Mumbai and was finally tracked down in Bangalore. The police say that Mishra, 34, had been on the run and moving from place to place to avoid them. Lawyers say that Mishra’s attempts to flee could work against him.

Mishra is said to be arguing that he either thought he was in the toilet or near it and was unable to control himself. He insists he had no intention of urinating on the woman who was in a business-class seat and was unaware he was doing so.

The ‘peegate’ incident has caused huge public controversy over the last few days.
