Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday directed the Delhi Police to take strict action against those involved in the Jahangirpuri violence here, official sources said. Clashes broke out during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in the national capital's Jahangirpuri area on Saturday in which eight policemen and a civilian were injured.

Delhi Police Commissioner Asthana on Monday had earlier said that those involved would not be spared irrespective of class, creed or religion. He told a press conference here that some people were trying to spread rumours on social media to keep the situation tense, and appealed to people to ignore them.

The investigation into the clashes has been handed over to the Crime Branch and 14 teams have been formed to take it forward. Four forensics teams also visited the spot to gather evidence.

The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of Delhi Police's Special Cell has been given the responsibility to identify those involved in the case by doing a thorough and detailed analysis of digital evidence, and accordingly legal action will be taken against them, Asthana said.

The Delhi Police organised a meeting at the Jahangirpuri police station on Monday in order to maintain peace and tranquillity in the violence-hit area in the northwestern parts of the city, officials said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Usha Rangnani said the meeting of the Aman Committee was held at the police station at 1.30 pm.

"All members were asked to appeal to their respective communities and the public in their area to maintain peace and harmony. They were also requested not to let any rumour or misinformation spread and in case they come across any such activities or mischievous acts, then to immediately report the same to police," the DCP said.

Those present at the meeting were assured of a professional and fair investigation in the case, she added.

A Delhi Police investigation team came under attack on Monday when it went to the house of a man who was seen firing a gunshot during clashes in Jahangirpuri, officials said.
