Actress Shabana Azmi was injured when her car rammed into a truck on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Shabana and her husband Javed Akhtar had been celebrating the lyricist’s 75th birthday with family, friends and guests from the industry for the last two days.

Sources said the couple were on their way to their farmhouse in Khandala. The accident occurred near Khalapur, over 60km from Mumbai, when the Tata Safari car they were travelling in to Pune rammed into a truck, Raigad superintendent of police Anil Paraskar said.

The actress was initially rushed to MGM Hospital in Navi Mumbai. Sources said she was shifted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.

She has suffered injuries to the nose, neck, the cervical spine and around her eyes. Javed Akhtar was injured in the foot while the driver wasn’t hurt. Shabana had to be pulled out from the car, sources said.

A local police officer said the driver had allegedly been trying to overtake another vehicle and rammed into the truck.
