Major General R.S. Jaswal, serving in the Assam Rifles, was on Friday dismissed without pension in connection with a sexual harassment case involving a serving woman officer.

The allegations against him had surfaced when Jaswal was inspector-general with Assam Rifles in Nagaland in 2016, sources in the army said. Court martial proceedings against Maj Gen Jaswal were said to have been confirmed by army chief General Bipin Rawat on Friday.

“Army Chief General Bipin Rawat has confirmed the sentence awarded to the officer. The decision of the Chief of Army Staff has been intimated to the Major General by the 2 Corps Commander, Lt Gen M.J.S. Kahlon, on Friday in Ambala,” a source said. The general courtmartial (GCM) under the Western Army Command at Chandimandir, Haryana, had recommended Jaswal’s dismissal after finding him guilty under Section 354A of the IPC (sexual harassment) and Section 45 (unacceptable conduct) of the Army Act.

During the GCM, Jaswal had denied the charges against him and alleged that he was a victim of the army’s factional feud following Gen. Rawat’s appointment as army chief in December 2016. The GCM was headed by a lieutenant general and it had nearly half a dozen military officers as its members.

The captain rank woman officer had filed a written complaint against Jaswal.
