Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Jitendra Awhad resigned from his post as National General Secretary on Wednesday, a day after veteran politician Sharad Pawar resigned as president of the NCP. Many more office bearers have also resigned with him, according to media reports.
Jitendra Awhad told reporters, “I have resigned from my post of National General Secretary and I have sent my resignation to NCP chief Sharad Pawar. All office bearers of Thane NCP have also resigned after Pawar Saheb's announcement (to resign from the post of party chief).”
However, NCP Maharashtra President Jayant Patil has not resigned from any of his post.
Chaotic scenes had unfolded during the launch of the second edition of Pawar’s autobiography yesterday after the political heavyweight announced that he is stepping down as the president of NCP. Later, Ajit Pawar said that Sharad Pawar has asked for two to three days to reconsider his decision.
Announcing his decision, Pawar had said, “I have three years tenure remaining in Rajya Sabha. I will not contest elections henceforth. In these three years, I will more concentrate on issues concerned to state and the country. I will not take any additional responsibilities. I started my political career on May 1, 1960. Yesterday we celebrated May day. After this prolonged political career, one must think about stopping somewhere. One must not be greedy. I will never take a position of sticking to a post after so many years. Therefore, you might feel uneasy. But I have decided to retire from the post of the NCP chief.”
