Three Shiv Sena workers have been arrested after a group beat up a young man from Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday for setting up a food stall in Mumbai.

The attack on Vishal Pandey revived memories from a decade ago when Sena supporters targeted migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, who have been living in the city for decades.

Earlier this month, many Biharis fled Gujarat in the face of hate attacks, which started after a Bihari worker was arrested on child rape charges.

“They told us, ‘You bhaiyas cannot set up stalls in Mumbai as the city belongs to us’,” said Vishal’s sister, Priyanka. “Bhaiya” is a pejorative term for people from Uttar Pradesh.

Vishal has his food stall near the Siddhivinayak temple in the Prabhadevi area. Around 4.15pm on Wednesday, a group of men stormed into the nearby Urvashi Building, where Vishal lives with his mother, sister and brother along with many other families.

According to the complaint lodged with Dadar police, Vishal was called downstairs, where the visitors began abusing and beating him.

He suffered injuries to the head and back while trying to flee back to his room upstairs.

His brother too was assaulted when he tried to intervene. A few blows landed on their mother.

The CCTV cameras recorded part of the incident.
