A Delhi court on Monday granted Kashmiri politician and student activist Shehla Rashid Shora protection from arrest in a sedition case, registered after she had tweeted about alleged army atrocities in Shopian.

Hearing her plea for anticipatory bail at the Patiala House Courts, additional sessions judge Pawan Kumar Jain posted the matter for a November 5 hearing.

“Till then the accused shall not be arrested. However, she shall join the investigation as and when call(ed) by the IO (investigating officer),” the judge said.

Shora, JNU student and general secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement party, had on August 17 posted tweets based on conversations with Kashmiris who had visited Delhi following a partial relaxation of the restrictions in the Valley.

The FIR against her, registered last week, was based on a complaint from Supreme Court lawyer Alakh Alok Srivastava.

In the court on Monday, the investigating officer, inspector Vikram of the special cell’s counter-intelligence unit, claimed that granting Shora bail “will cause irreversible harm to the investigation…”.

Questioned by the judge, special additional public prosecutor Irfan Ahmed confirmed that the “police had not received any complaint from the army” and sought at least six weeks’ time for the probe.
