The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a Congress plea highlighting a video in which Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa allegedly predicts a favourable apex court verdict in a case relating to the disqualification of MLAs.
The bench of Justices N.V. Ramana and V. Ramasubramanian, however, told Congress counsel Kapil Sibal that the question of early hearing would be decided by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. It remains unclear when the matter would be listed.
After 17 Congress-JDS lawmakers had resigned and helped the BJP topple the coalition government in Karnataka in July, the then Assembly Speaker had disqualified them all and banned them from contesting any by-election. The disqualified MLAs have challenged the order in the apex court, and the verdict is expected this week.
Last week, a video surfaced in which the chief minister purportedly admits encouraging the defections with the endorsement of party president and Union home minister Amit Shah.
In the video, Yediyurappa also purportedly predicts a favourable Supreme Court verdict in the apex court case, which the Congress has construed as interference and contempt. It’s application asks the apex court to take note of the video before passing the judgment in the case.
