The name of Justice Nikhil S. Kariel of Gujarat High Court was missing from the list of judges whose transfer the Supreme Court collegium announced on Thursday. The Gujarat High Court Advocates Association had a week ago staged a revolt on the assumption that the collegiums had recommended the transfer of Justice Kariel to Patna High Court.

The lawyers had threatened an indefinite boycott if the purported transfer was not revoked, and Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud had held talks with them.

The name of Justice A. Abhishek Reddy of Telangana High Court, whose proposed transfer also to Patna High Court had triggered a similar revolt by the Telangana High Court Advocates Association, was, however, on Thursday’s list of judges to be shifted.

In a resolution uploaded in the evening, the collegium — made up of Chief Justice Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abdul Nazeer — announced the transfer of seven judges to various high courts.

The collegium resolution recommends the transfers of Justice V.M. Velumani (Madras High Court to Calcutta High Court); Justice Battu Devanand (Andhra Pradesh High Court to Madras High Court); Justice D. Ramesh (Andhra Pradesh High Court to Allahabad High Court); Justice Lalitha Kanneganti (Telangana High Court to Karnataka High Court); Justice D. Nagarjun (Telangana High Court to Madras High Court); Justice T. Raja (Madras High Court to Rajasthan High Court) and Justice Reddy (Telangana High Court to Patna High Court).

The Gujarat Bar association had adopted a resolution at an “extraordinary general meeting” on November 17 opposing the transfer of Justice Kariel, whom it called “one of the finest, honest, upright and unbiased judge(s)”.

On Monday, the CJI and two other senior apex court judges, Justices Kaul and M.R. Shah, held talks with the striking Gujarat and Telangana Bar associations. Both associations called off their protest from Tuesday.
