The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Tamil Nadu government and minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on a plea for the registration of an FIR against him for his remarks on Sanatan Dharma.

A bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Bela M. Trivedi also issued notices to the Centre, CBI and DMK parliamentarian A. Raja on the petition filed by the Chennai-based B. Jagannath for registration of an FIR against Udhayanidhi, who had called for the eradication of Sanatan Dharma.

Justice Bose initially expressed disinclination to entertain the petition and suggested that the petitioner approach Madras High Court. However, senior advocate Dama Seshadri Naidu, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that there were a large number of cases in which the Supreme Court had directly entertained petitions under Article 32.
