Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav will honour the woman who was seen in a viral video standing in front of a police inspector pointing a revolver at her and allegedly threatening her against casting her vote in the Uttar Pradesh by-election on Wednesday.

Tohida Begum, 50, from Kakrauli in the Meerapur Assembly constituency of Muzaffarnagar, will be honoured for her “fearlessness”.

Tohida had demanded action against police inspector Rajeev Sharma for “terrorising her and other women voters and depriving them of their right to exercise their franchise”. The police, in turn, had booked her along with 28 others for attacking the cops.

Former Muzaffarnagar MP Kadir Rana and SP district president Ziya Chaudhary met Tohida, wife of driver Abdul Samad, at their residence on Friday and thanked her for showing courage.

“We are amazed by her bravery. The police officer was carrying a revolver and asking her to return home without casting her vote but she was standing there fearlessly and reminding the cops of her rights as a voter. We have spoken to Akhilesh and he has said he will soon call her to Lucknow and honour her. She is a saviour of democracy,” Rana said.

Tohida claimed half a dozen policemen were wielding batons on those who were going to cast their votes.

“As I decided to move forward along with three women behind me, Sharma pointed his revolver towards us and said he would shoot us. Some policemen were carrying stones in their hands. We didn’t fear them. Unfortunately, they didn’t let us move forward and we returned home without casting our votes. I don’t fear a case against me because every moment has been recorded in a video, which is in the public domain. The police have already been exposed,” she added.

Abhishek Singh, senior superintendent of police of Muzaffarnagar, has claimed that what was shown in the video was only half-truth.

“There was a mob hurling stones at the police and the officer had reacted against them,” Singh claimed.

“We have filed cases against 28 identified and 120 unidentified attackers for organising a dharna and attacking the police near the Kisan Inter College polling booth in Kakrauli,” he added.
