RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday said that "no one should declare himself to be god", which was seen as yet another effort by the Sangh Parivar head to obliquely slam Prime Minister Narendra Modi's claim of being a "godsend".

"In our lifetime one should do good deeds without bothering about success or failure. Anybody can become a memorable person with his deeds. But whether we have been able to achieve that level, this decision should be left to the people," Bhagwat said, speaking in Marathi at an event in Pune on Thursday to mark the centenary year of Shankar Dinkar Kane.

"One should not claim himself to be god. Let people decide whether there is god in you," he added, giving an example of Kane, who worked in Manipur towards children's education, as an ideal of selfless service.

This is the second time the head of the BJP's ideological fountainhead has been found to be using Modi's claim in the middle of the national elections of being a "godsend" to criticise it, indicating the Sangh's strong disapproval.

Modi in an interview during the early summer general election had said that he was "convinced" that god had sent him and that he was not a normal biological human being.

Congress communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh seized on Bhagwat's comments to attack the ruling party and claim that the lifespan of the Modi government was not long.

"After June 4, 2024, relations between the non-biological PM and the RSS have nosedived — and they continue to be in turbulence. At an event in Pune today, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat rebuked the PM for his claim to non-biological origins…," Ramesh posted on X.
