The RSS on Tuesday endorsed the Narendra Modi government’s line on Rahul Gandhi’s remarks during his UK visit and on samesex marriage.

“How is democracy under threat?” RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale said while referring to Rahul’s remarks.

“There are elections happening from Parliament to panchayats...”.

Hosabale, the second in command of the RSS, was addressing the media after a three-day meeting of the top decision-making body of the Hindutva outfit, seen as the ideological parent of the BJP.

The response came as the government for the second day in a row continued with its offensive against Rahul and demanded his apology while seeking to skirt the Opposition’s questions about the Adani-Hindenburg issue.

The RSS leader also backed the government’s line before the Supreme Court opposing same-sex marriages. “In our culture and thought, marriage is not only for enjoyment but is an institution,” Hosabale said.

“Marriage is for the benefit of family and society at l arge. It is not physical and sexual enjoyment. That is the Hindu culture,” the RSS leader said, backing the government line.

The government in an affidavit before the Supreme Court on Monday had firmly opposed petitions seeking recognition of same-sex marriages.

The matter has been referred to a five-judge Constitution bench.

In January, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had used the humanitarian clause to accept the right of the LGBT community to live in society.

“These people have a right to live and we have to provide them social acceptance, bearing in mind that they are also human beings,” he said.
