The Supreme Court has awarded Rs 62.27 lakh as compensation along with interest to a 12-year-old girl who suffered 100 per cent injuries in a 2007 road accident, leaving her in a permanent vegetative state.

The bench of Justices L. Nageswara Rao and Deepak Gupta said the interest of 7.5 per cent would be calculated from 2008.

“While awarding this amount we are not only taking the physical disability…. This child will remain bedridden for life. Her mental age will be that of a nine-month-old child,” the bench said on Wednesday as it enhanced the compensation of Rs 25.78 lakh Punjab and Haryana High Court had awarded.
