An engineering student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, was found hanging in his hostel room on Monday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Debamalya Roy Karmakar, a second-year BTech student of the Electronics and Communication Engineering branch.

Registrar, NIT, Prof Rohan Dhiman told The Telegraph: “Debamalya hails from Tripura. His roommate in the MS Swaminathan Hall of Residence, is a boy from Sambalpur.

“He was not present in
the room. He had left for his house for the weekend and is yet to return. Debamalya was alone in the room. I got to know about the incident at 10am.”

Prof Dhiman said: “There is no issue relating to his studies and his health.

“We found him hanging from the ceiling fan of the room. We are yet to know what could be the reason for Debamalya to take the extreme step.”

He said: “Debamalya was very reserved in nature and hardly talked to anyone. He remained confined to his work and studies only. His parents have already left Agartala and are arriving here on Tuesday morning.

“The parents were inconsolable over the phone. They are crestfallen and we are not able to talk more about the probable reasons for the suicide.

After they reach here, we will be able to know more about Debamalya.”

The registrar said: “We have kept the body to wait till the arrival of his parents. As per the initial investigation, Debamalya committed suicide early in the morning around 4 am to 5 am.

“The postmortem report will reveal the details.”

Sources said Debamalya’s parents called him repeatedly. As he did not pick up
the call, the parents frantically called the security in-charge and the warden of the
hostel.

All of them rushed to the room and found that the room was locked from inside.

Later in the presence of all the students, the authorities broke open the door and found him hanging.
