The special MP-MLA court on Tuesday convicted dreaded don-turned-politician, RJD lawmaker Anant Singh alias Chhote Sarkar, in a 2019 arms recovery case from his ancestral house at Ladma in Patna district.
The court of special judge Triloki Dubey found the MLA guilty under various sections of the arms act. It will pronounce the quantum of punishment on June 21.
“We will challenge the decision in Patna High Court after getting a copy of the judgment on June 21,” the legislator’s lawyer Sunil Kumar told reporters.
A police team led by the then additional superintendent of police Lipi Singh had raided and recovered an AK-47 assault rifle, a magazine, 26 cartridges and two hand grenades from his ancestral house on August 16, 2019.
Singh, an independent MLA at that time, went absconding, but surrendered in the Saket court in New Delhi a few days later. He was brought back to Patna and lodged in the Beur Central Jail. The state government recommended speedy trial in the case.
He is also an accused in several cases pertaining to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, extortion, criminal conspiracy and others.
The MLA was earlier close to Nitish Kumar but fell out with him during 2013-17 when the chief minister left the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and became a part of the Grand Alliance.
Later, Anant shook hands with RJD chief Lalu Prasad and his son, leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav. He contested the 2020 polls on the RJD ticket from jail and won.
The RJD MLA has blamed Janata Dal United (JDU) president and Munger MP Rajiv Ranjan Singh a.k.a. Lalan Singh for his current troubles and has accused him of implicating him in cases related to illicit arms and ammunition.
