The Centre is expected to implement the long-pending recommendation of a parliamentary panel asking it to handover VIP protection duties to the special security group of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and relieve some paramilitary forces of their responsibility of guarding high-profile dignitaries, government sources said on Wednesday.

At present, the CRPF, ITBP, CISF and NSG protect the high-profile dignitaries.

“The Union home ministry is planning to review the existing security covers being provided to high-profile dignitaries across the country. The move is aimed at handing over VIP security duties to the special security group of the CISF, besides keeping ITBP and NSG away from VIP security duties to reduce its workload,” said a security official with the Union home ministry.

Over the past couple of years, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and National Security Guard (NSG) have expressed disappointment and urged the Centre to keep them away from VIP security duties, the official said.

An official with the country’s largest paramilitary force, CRPF, blamed the VIP culture in India, no matter which party is in power. He said the list of VVIP protectees has been growing but the government has failed to act on the parliamentary panel recommendation for several years. “At present, nearly 250 VIPs are being provided security by the central armed police forces, including the CRPF and the CISF,” said a home ministry official.
