A 17-year-old gang rape victim and her parents consumed poison in front of the residence of Varanasi senior superintendent of police, Prabhakar Chaudhary, on Monday and are in hospital.
A police source said a note found at the spot, purportedly written by the girl, accuses police of mounting pressure on her to withdraw her case.
The note said three men, Zameel Alam, Utkarsh Tiwari and Vishal Maurya, had advertised in local newspapers that they were looking for actors for a Bollywood movie. “I approached them and they took me to Mumbai in October, 2019, and sold to a woman who ran a brothel there,” it said.
The note said the teen escaped and returned to Varanasi, where police promptly registered her case. But “these criminals killed my elder brother and threw his body in the Ganga in November”.
Later, the police started pressuring her if she didn’t withdraw the case. “The police officers come to my house almost every day,” it said. Chaudhary denied the allegation.
