The Opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha were not allowed on Thursday to raise the issue of wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Paris Olympics, leading to an uproar.

The parties associated with the INDIA block and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) staged a walkout from the Upper House after the denial of the opportunity to raise the issue. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said that the entire nation was standing with Phogat but the Opposition was trying to politicise the issue.

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien expressed annoyance and made certain comments about the denial of opportunity. Visibly upset, Dhankhar warned of action against O’Brien for “shouting at the Chair”.

During Zero Hour, the Chairman usually reads out notices given by members seeking discussion on any matter. Opposition sources said four notices had been submitted for discussing the wrestler's disqualification in the women's freestyle wrestling competition in Olympics on Wednesday.

However, Dhankhar, after tabling the routine reports, did not mention the notices received by him and asked another member to raise some other matter. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge got a very brief opportunity when he asked the government to explain how Phogat was disqualified and who was responsible for the incident. O’Brien asked for permission to raise the matter for a minute but did not get the chance. The Opposition parties staged a walkout for a brief period.

Leader of the House J.P. Nadda said the behaviour of O’Brien was condemnable. Dhankhar called a meeting of floor leaders of all parties to discuss the behaviour of O’Brien.
