Raid on Bihar engineer ‘yields crores’

The special vigilance unit (SVU) of the Bihar vigilance department raided the residences and office of a government engineer on Tuesday and reportedly unearth unaccounted wealth of several crores of rupees and gold ornaments.

The person has been identified as Anil Kumar Yadav, an executive engineer with the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO), which comes under the state urban development department.

SVU sleuths claimed that his assets far exceeded his salary during his service, and that his illicit income was through various tenders passed by the corporation. “We have come to know during the raid that Yadav was involved in passing a tender of Rs 400 crore and got a hefty amount for doing so. He has purchased properties in the name of his father-in-law and brother-in-law,” an SVU official said.

The raid on Yadav commenced on Tuesday morning and was going on till the filing of this report. The SVU had registered an FIR under various sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and obtained a search warrant from the court of the special vigilance judge.

“Our teams have unearthed movable and immovable assets worth several crores in the raid on Yadav. He has invested much in real estate,” SVU additional director general N.H. Khan said.

“The executive engineer also owns a plot at Danapur, another at Anisabad, a flat at Punaichak locality in Patna, and has booked a flat at Phulwarisharif. Documents related to land in the Madhepura district have also been recovered. These assets are worth several crores of rupees,” Khan added.

The SVU sleuths recovered ornaments worth Rs 35 lakh and Rs 2 lakh cash. The executive engineer also invested Rs 9 lakh in financial companies and additional evidence of expenditure worth Rs 75 lakh through cheques. He owns a car and a special utility vehicle, and two motorbikes.
