Rahul Gandhi brought a pup home for his mother, Sonia Gandhi, earlier this month and introduced it to the world in a video on his YouTube channel @rahulgandhi, saying: “Meet Noorie, the newest member of our family.”
He has now been slapped with a case for hurting religious sentiments by choosing the name Noorie, which means light.
The video, posted two weeks ago, begins with the Congress leader’s “quick visit to Goa to get Ma a new friend” and shows Sonia coming out of her house to receive the pup and carry it indoors.
“I’d like you all to meet the newest and the cutest member of our family — our li’l pup, Noorie,” Rahul posted. “She flew in from Goa straight into our arms, and has become the light of our lives....”
A leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has filed a petition before the chief judicial magistrate of Allahabad against Rahul for allegedly hurting Muslim sentiments by naming the puppy Noorie.
Mohammad Farhan, the spokesperson for the Uttar Pradesh unit of Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM said: “I have told the court that the word Noor is related to Prophet Mohammad and is mentioned 42 times in Quran. Noorie is a synonym of Noor. Rahul Gandhi had named his puppy Noorie and hurt the sentiment of the minority community.”
“The court has summoned me on November 8 before admitting the case,” he added.
The petitioner has also stated that many Islamic saints, including Hazrat Abul Hussain Ahmad Noorie, have the word “Noorie” in their names.
“It is a holy word for us and no animal should be given this name,” he added.
