The MLA from Bharatpur in Bengal, Humayun Kabir, is likely to be the first Trinamul leader to face the state’s ruling party’s newly constituted disciplinary committee for legislators.

Kabir, who has been demanding the induction of Trinamul general secretary Abhishek Banerjee as deputy chief minister, will be served a show-cause notice by the disciplinary committee for his repeated outburst against a section of the party leadership, sources in chief minister mamata Banerjee’s party said.

“He has been speaking against the party for a long time now,” said a top Trinamul leader. “There is no doubt that Mamata Banerjee is our undisputed leader and will remain so till the moment she decides to make any changes.

““The disciplinary committee will act as per the instructions of the chief minister. If he fails to come up with a satisfactory response appropriate action will be taken,” the Trinamul leader added.

On Monday, during an internal meeting at her residence in Calcutta’s Kalighat, Mamata had announced three disciplinary committees to rein in truant party leaders.

The disciplinary committee members for legislators include the ministers Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, Chandrima Bhattacharya and Aroop Biswas, Calcutta mayor and state minister Firhad Hakim and MLAs Nirmal Ghosh and Debashish Kumar.

Kabir, who had quit the Trinamul and contested unsuccessfully from Murshidabad as a BJP nominee in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, had returned to his parent party and subsequently became an MLA in the 2021 Assembly polls.

“I have doubts over the intentions of those close to Didi. Do they truly want to see her in power in Bengal for long?” Kabir had asked on Tuesday – a day after the committees were formed – hitting out at the Mamata loyalists in the majority in different internal party platforms.

Kabir had particularly targeted Hakim, one of the closest aides of the chief minister.

“Hakim was made in charge of Murshidabad. How many meetings has he held with the elected representatives from the district, from where the party has three members of Parliament?” Kabir had asked.

Known for provocative statements, Kabir had opposed the nomination of former cricketer Yusuf Pathan from the Berhampore seat, who went on to defeat the six-time MP and former state Congress chief Adhir Chowdhury.

During the Lok Sabha polls campaign, Kabir had declared that BJP supporters should be thrown into the Bhagirathi, which brought upon him the censure of the Election Commission of India.

“All this while he has been making statements against the party and embarrassing it,” said a Trinamul MLA from Kabir’s district. “The leadership kept quiet till it suited them. Now he has targeted the inner coterie of Didi. Let us see if he is only reprimanded or some action is taken. Otherwise, what is the point of having so many disciplinary committees?”

Kabir on Tuesday said he was not scared of any probe.

“I have many enemies in the party,” he told the media outside the Assembly premises. “I will reply to the party at the opportune moment.“Mamata Banerjee made Abhishek the number two. If I speak for him, why should I be served with a show-cause notice?”
