Protests took place outside Manipur Bhawan here and women’s commissions in Delhi and the Centre intervened in the case of the naked parading of two tribal women in Thoubal district.

The National Commission for Women tweeted: “NCW has formally directed the Head, Public Policy at @TwitterIndia, to remove the video showing the disgraceful act of two women being paraded naked. This video compromises the victims’ identities and is a punishable offence.”

NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma tweeted: “Just talked to DGP Manipur and he apprised that the main accused has been arrested in this matter. He assured me that others will also be arrested soon.”

The Northeast Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) and the Centre for Struggling Women protested outside Manipur Bhawan.

NEFIS member Kishan Yumnam, a student of Delhi University from Manipur, said: “The Manipur chief minister should immediately resign taking responsibility for failing to ensure the safety of women in the state. The NEFIS also demands that the police officers who failed to take action and arrest the culprits should be immediately terminated from their jobs. The NEFIS earnestly appeals to all sections of society to stop violence against each other and initiate dialogue to find a political solution to the current crisis....”

Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh on Thursday.

She said in a statement: “...It is disheartening to see the silence and inaction of the Centre and the Manipur state over such horrific crimes.... I wish to visit the place and interact with the women and girls so that a fact-finding report can be submitted to the government.”

The Working Group for Naga Rights in Manipur said in a statement: “The beastly crime committed against the innocent residents... has taken more than two months to surface to public knowledge, but the visceral hatred of the mob that reeks in its perpetration is as new, immediate and stomach-turning as the tragic murder of the Maring Naga lady a few days ago.”

The CPM’s All India Kisan Sabha said in a statement: “AIKS protests against the criminal silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 4th May till today, when he has for the first time broken his silence and condemned the heinous attack on the women.... AIKS is of the clear opinion that Narendra Modi has lost the moral authority to remain Prime Minister as he has failed to ensure the prevalence of the rule of law and defend the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.”

CPIML-Liberation’s AISA has called for a demonstration on Jantar Mantar Road in Delhi on Friday.

The Federation of Central Universities Teachers Associations also condemned the atrocity on the women and the continuing violence.

“Fedcuta demands justice for the victims and arrest and prosecution of culprits...,” the outfit said.
