Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 115th episode of his monthly radio program Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, acknowledged Butluram Mathra's unwavering dedication to preserving and promoting the unique folk art of the Abujhmadia tribe, placing a spotlight on Chhattisgarh’s rich cultural heritage.
For over four decades, Mathra has committed himself to preserving the traditional art of the Abujhmadia, a tribe native to the region, elevating the distinct cultural identity of Chhattisgarh on a national scale. Recognising his efforts, Prime Minister Modi remarked, “Butluram ji has preserved the heritage of folk art that reflects Chhattisgarh’s culture. His dedication is an inspiration for future generations.”
The Prime Minister’s recognition highlights Mathra’s influence on showcasing Chhattisgarh’s unique culture to a broader audience and emphasises the importance of preserving India’s indigenous art forms.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also voiced his appreciation for Mathra’s work following the Prime Minister’s acknowledgement, noting its significance for cultural preservation. He remarked, “Tribal culture remains vibrant in its original form in Narayanpur, and our government will actively promote the efforts of Shri Mathra.” Sai further commended Mathra’s support for initiatives such as Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, and Swachh Bharat, underscoring the artist’s dedication to societal causes.
The commendation from the nation’s leaders reinforces Mathra's efforts, bringing renewed focus to Chhattisgarh’s artistic heritage and its guardians.
