Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday claimed that his government does not interfere with the functioning of investigating agencies and has given full freedom to them to work against corruption.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on the motion of thanks to the President's address, Modi said: “I have given full freedom to agencies to act against corruption. The government does not interfere in the affairs of agencies. No corrupt person will escape law. This is Modi's guarantee."
Modi also said the government was working to restore normalcy in Manipur which has been witnessing violence for the last one year. The Opposition parties staged a walkout in protest.
Around 11,000 FIRs have been filed in connection with the Manipur violence and over 500 people have been arrested. The cases of violence are gradually declining. Schools, colleges and offices are working normally. All efforts are on to solve the problem, he said.
“Those who are trying to pour fuel to the fire should refrain from such acts. The history of Manipur shows a long-standing social conflict. Because of this President’s rule was imposed 10 times. In 1993, similar violence continued for five years. We have understood and are working for normalcy,” he said.
The Opposition parties have alleged misuse of the CBI, income tax and the ED against its leaders. Modi cited the demand for a CBI probe by the Congress and AAP against each other in alleged corruption cases and tried to justify the actions of the investigative agencies.
"The Congress held a press conference and alleged that the AAP was involved in a liquor scam. When actions are being taken, they are blaming Modi. Their prince (referring to Rahul Gandhi) levels allegations against the Kerala chief minister and wants him to be sent to jail. In Chhattisgarh, the AAP had demanded a CBI inquiry against Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel in a corruption case when he was the chief minister,” Modi said.
On the Opposition's allegations that the government had plans to amend the Constitution, Modi said, for him, it is not a mere compilation of articles. “We value its spirit and words. The Constitution guides us like a lighthouse in our actions," he said.
