India will walk together with Bangladesh, Modi tells Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh Prime Minister stresses on 'people's federation, poverty alleviation, and economy' as the cornerstone of bilateral ties

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House on Tuesday with both leaders expressing the confidence that the ties between the age-old neighbours would continue to flourish.

"India-Bangladesh relations will reach new heights in the next 25 years of Amrit Kaal, " Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his opening address. Hailing Bangladesh as India's biggest development partner, Modi said the two countries must improve connectivity and ensure trade ties flourish.

He also noted that rising energy prices were a big challenge in in the present times, adding that he would like to see the two neighbours forge stronger economic ties. "India will walk together with Bangladesh," Prime Minister Modi said.

Hasina said, "India is our friend. Whenever I come here, it is a pleasure for me, especially because we always recall the contribution India has made during our Liberation War. We have a friendly relationship, we are cooperating with each other."The Bangladesh Prime Minister also said the main focus of the two countries was to focus on "people's federation, poverty alleviation, and economy."

MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "PM Narendra Modi and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina held talks to review and further strengthen the all-encompassing India-Bangladesh partnership."

Earlier, Sheikh Hasina laid a wreath and paid tributes at Rajghat. She received a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Hasina is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar later in the day.

Hasina began her four-day visit on Monday. Soon after arriving in New Delhi, she met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and discussed issues of bilateral interest. She also visited Nizamuddin Aulia Dargah, a prominent pilgrimage tourist attraction in Delhi.

Hasina was welcomed by Darshana Jardosh, Minister of State for Textiles and Railways in New Delhi, upon her arrival on Monday.
