Former Meghalaya governor Satya Pal Malik on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak in Parliament on the “horrific” situation in Manipur.

“The Prime Minister speaks outside, standing beside the steps of Parliament, but doesn’t go inside the House to make a statement. I would urge him to speak inside Parliament,” Malik told reporters at an event organised by a farmers’ and workers’ outfit.

“The Prime Minister should share the sorrow and suffering of the daughters of Manipur with the country,” he added.

He said Modi’s statement on the video of two Manipur women being paraded naked came under pressure from the Supreme Court, which took cognisance of the matter and summoned the seniormost law officers.

Malik, who was trusted by the Modi government to preside over Jammu and Kashmir as the governor while it was grappling with fateful events, said Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh should be sacked immediately but was managing to continue with the blessings of his masters in Delhi.

“The Manipur chief minister should not stay for even a minute. But he is there because he has the blessings of his masters in Delhi,” he said.

Asked about his allegation that Prime Minister Modi hushed him up by saying “tum abhi chup raho” when he as governor reported that the blame for the Pulwama massacre that killed 40 CRPF jawans lay on the Centre’s own lapses, Malik said his demand for a probe was yet to be met by the Centre.

Malik had claimed that the CRPF had asked the Centre for aircraft to ferry the jawans but it was refused.

“I still stand by my claim. Had the central government provided aircraft to transport such a large number of jawans, the horrific incident wouldn’t have taken place.” he said.
