Elections happen, but Budget session is very important, says Modi

PM urges MPs to make Parliament deliberations fruitful, Sitharaman to table Economic Survey

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said elections keep happening but Parliament's Budget session is very important and urged all MPs to make it fruitful.

Addressing the media ahead of the start of the Budget Session, Modi said that in today's global situation, there are a lot of opportunities for India and asserted that a confidence is being instilled in the world for India for its economic progress, vaccination programme and Made in India vaccines.

"True that polls affect sessions and debates. But I request all MPs that elections will go on but Budget Session draws a blueprint for an entire year and therefore, it is very important," Modi said.

"The more fruitful we make this session, the better opportunity there would be in the coming year to take the country to new economic heights," he said.

Modi also called for discussions with an open-mind to help take the country on the path to development swiftly.

The Budget session of Parliament is all set to begin on Monday. Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Economic Survey 2021-22 today and present her fourth straight Union Budget tomorrow with financial statements and tax proposals for fiscal year 2022-23 (April 2022 to March 2023).

The session comes ahead of assembly polls in five states -- Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Goa.

The main Opposition party, Congress, has said it will reach out to like-minded parties to raise issues including farmers’ distress, China-India border row, Covid-19 relief, sale of Air India, etc. during the Budget session.

A meeting of the Union Cabinet is scheduled to be held on Tuesday at 10.10 am to approve the Union Budget 2022-23.

The Budget session of Parliament will begin today, with President Ram Nath Kovind addressing the joint sitting of both the Houses. Soon after the President's address, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will table the economic survey on the first day of the session. Newly appointed chief economic adviser (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran will address a press conference at 3.45pm wherein he will discuss the survey.

The first part of the Budget session will continue till February 11, following which there will be around a month-long recess. The Parliament will come back again for the second half on March 14 and continue the Budget session till April 8.
