Prime Minister Narendra Modi paying homage at Gandhi Smriti, where Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated 74 years ago, on Martyrs’ Day (Sunday). Modi, who has not yet commented in public on the calls for a genocide against Muslims and for the declaration of a Hindu Rashtra, tweeted on Sunday: “Remembering Bapu on his Punya Tithi. It is our collective endeavour to further popularise his noble ideals.”

The Prime Minister tweeted pictures of himself at the memorial to the Father of the Nation, too, adding: “Earlier today, paid tributes to Bapu at Rajghat.”

The Hindu Mahasabha on Sunday paid tribute to Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, where the BJP is in power. The outfit also bestowed the “Godse-Apte Bharat Ratna” on jailed religious leader Kalicharan Maharaj, who was arrested for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the Mahatma in Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh.

The BJP was indeed outraged — by a tweet from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to mark Martyrs’ Day. “Ek Hindutvawadi ne Gandhiji ko goli maari thi. Sab Hindutvawadiyon ko lagta hai Gandhiji nahin rahe. Jahan satya hai, wahan aaj bhi Bapu zinda hain (One follower of Hindutva shot Gandhiji. All followers of Hindutva feel Gandhiji is no more. Wherever there is truth, Gandhi is still alive),” Rahul, who has consistently been drawing a distinction between Hinduism and Hindutva, wrote.

Another tweet from Rahul quoted the Mahatma: “When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible but in the end, they always fall. Think of it — always.”
