Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday complimented the Supreme Court for protecting citizens' “freedom of speech” besides passing "historic" judgments in favour of “social justice” and “equality”.
Inaugurating the 75th-year celebrations of the Supreme Court here, Modi underlined the need for the judiciary to ensure “ease of justice” for the people on a par with his government’s vision of “ease of business”, “ease of living” and “ease of communication”.
Sunday marked the start of the Supreme Court's diamond jubilee year since its inception on January 28, 1950.
Unveiling the celebrations, the Prime Minister launched citizen-centric information and technology initiatives that included the Digital Supreme Court Reports (Digi SCR) and a new website for the apex court.
Digi SCR will make Supreme Court judgments accessible to all citizens free of cost in an electronic format. So far, 36,308 apex court judgments have been put in the digital format and bookmarked.
“On this historic occasion, I congratulate all the legal luminaries and particularly the Supreme Court of India for ensuring equality, social justice, protection of individual rights, freedom of speech and many other social and political rights through its various historic judgments,” the Prime Minister said in Hindi.
