The plight of farmers brought the Opposition leadership on one platform on Friday with even Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal sharing the stage and being captured in a single photo frame for the first time ever.

This was one step forward for them since the swearing-in of Karnataka chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, which had both of them on one stage but always so far apart that they could not be captured in the same frame.

Since then, the two have often extended support to the same cause but never shared a stage, with one invariably arriving after the other had left.

On Friday, Rahul was midway into his speech when Kejriwal arrived. Rahul extended the courtesy of staying back and hearing out Kejriwal, after which all the leaders posed for a photograph, holding hands.

endorsed two bills the farmers have drafted for fair and assured prices and freedom from indebtedness. Rahul and Kejriwal also criticised the farmer-specific insurance policies promoted by the Narendra Modi government.

Broken by the agrarian crisis, the farmers had marched to Delhi from across the country to mount pressure on the Modi government for a 21-day special session of Parliament to enact the two laws.
