A group of former bureaucrats and civil society members has moved the Supreme Court seeking the initiation of contempt proceedings against the Ghaziabad district administration and the Uttar Pradesh police for permitting the organisers of a Dharam Sansad to allegedly upload hate comments on its website.
The Dharam Sansadwill be organised from December 17-21 in Ghaziabad bythe Yati Narasinghanand Foundation.
A bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar had on Monday asked advocate Prashant Bhushan to move an application for urgent listing of the petition.
However, till late onTuesday evening, therewas no confirmation about the listing of the petition.
The petition has beenjointly filed by social activist Aruna Roy and retired civil servants Ashok Kumar Sharma, Deb Mukerji, Navrekha Sharma and others, accusing the Ghaziabad district administration and the Uttar Pradesh police of “wilful and deliberate contempt” of the earlier orders of the Supreme Court directing all competent authorities to take suomotu action against individuals or groups indulgingin communal activities and hate speeches.
The petitioners alleged that the website of theYati Narasinghanand Foundation, the organiser of the Dharam Sansad, had uploaded several statementsagainst members of a particular community.
The petitioners have claimed that the allegedcommunal statements violated several Supreme Court judgments since 2018that called for preventiveand punitive measuresagainst hate speeches andcontempt actions against the officials who failed to do so.
