As many as 24 all-women polling booths will be set up across Odisha’s Ganjam district in the elections to the urban local bodies (ULBs), slated to be held on March 24.
Called “Pink Booths”, these all-women polling stations will be managed exclusively by women officials.
Each booth will have four people, including presiding officer, first and second polling officers and security personnel. All of them will be women, said an officer of district administration.
The Pink Booths will facilitate differently-abled and pregnant women and encourage women voters to exercise their voting rights.
Sources said that five Pink Booths will be set up in the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) area, three in Hinjili municipality and the rest will be set up in other Notified Area Councils (NAC) of the district.
“We have already identified the booths which will be converted as all-women booths. We had experimented in the recently concluded panchayat elections in a few places in the district. The response was encouraging one. We will also involve volunteers of the National Service scheme in polling booths in Berhampur Municipal Corporation and other areas to provide assistance to people in need,” Ganjam collector Vijay Amruta Kulange told The Telegraph.
More than 2.55 lakh voters will exercise their franchise to elect mayor and 42 corporators in the BeMC area. Elections will also be held in other urban areas of the state, including Bhubaneswar and Cuttack Municipal Corporations.
