Diplomat-turned-politician Pavan K. Varma quit the Trinamul Congress on Friday by announcing his resignation in a tweet to Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, a few days after Nitish Kumar — who was Varma’s first political boss — parted ways with the BJP.
Varma has not revealed his future plans but speculation is rife that he will return to the JDU from where he was expelled in January 2020 along with Prashant Kishor for questioning the party’s stance on the Citizenship Amendment Act.
Varma, in a tweet, on Friday morning said: “Dear @MamataOfficial ji, Please accept my resignation from the @AITCofficial. I want to thank you for the warm welcome accorded to me, and for your affection and courtesies. I look forward to remaining in touch. Wishing you all the best, and with warm regards, Pavan K. Varma.”
He had joined the Trinamul in November 2021 and had been appointed national vice-president a month later. He had been associated with the JDU since 2014 when he had a short Rajya Sabha stint after which he was made general secretary and national spokesman.
After his expulsion, Varma had tweeted: “Thank you Nitish Kumar ji for freeing me from my increasingly untenable position of defending you and your policies. I wish you well in your ambition of being CM of Bihar at any cost.”
