The Opposition on Thursday used a video of rainwater leaking from the roof of the new Parliament’s lobby, which is barely over a year old, to slam the Modi 3.0 government.

The new Parliament building inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in May last year was constructed at a cost of around 1,200 crore by Tata Projects and designed by Ahmedabad-based HCP Design, Planning and Management Private Limited, led by architect Bimal Patel, believed to be close to the ruling dispensation.

“Paper leak outside, water leak inside. The recent water leak in the Parliament lobby used by the President highlights urgent weather resilience issues in the new building, just a year after completion,” Congress MP Manickam Tagore said in a post on X, adding that he would move an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to raise the issue.

Tagore attached a video in his post that showed a bucket placed on the floor under one dome in the lobby area of the new Parliament building to collect the water dripping from the roof after a heavy downpour on Wednesday evening.

Tagore’s adjournment notice, however, was disallowed by the Lok Sabha Speaker.

After Tagore, other Opposition leaders such as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra also questioned the government.

“People are asking whether water dripping from every new roof constructed under the BJP government is a part of their well thought out design or...,” Akhilesh posted on X, leaving his sentence incomplete to leave room for interpretation.

A similar leak was reported from the roof of the newly inaugurated Ram temple in Ayodhya in late June.

In his post on X, the SP leader also taunted the government by suggesting a shift to the old Parliament building till the “water dripping programme is going on”.

Trinamool MP Moitra connected the water leak to the Lok Sabha polls results to take a swipe at the government.

“New Parliament lobby is leaking water. Given the building is a monstrous edifice to @narendramodi ‘s ego it is only fitting that it has got shaky post 2024 Lok Sabha results,” Moitra posted on X, adding that even the newly constructed Bharat Mandapam leaks.

The government maintained silence but the Lok Sabha secretariat said in a statement: “The adhesive materials used to fix the glass domes over the Lobby of the building was slightly displaced causing minor leakage of water. Corrective measures were taken immediately.”
