Pakistani authorities on Saturday returned after a week the body of a 17-year-old boy who had drowned in a river in Jammu’s Poonch district and had been washed away to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Police said Zaffar Ahmad, 17, of Kalai village in Poonch had gone for a bath in the river on July 31.

Officials said the army, joined by the police and the State Disaster Response Force, failed to trace the boy and contacted their Pakistani counterparts after suspecting that he may have been swept across the Line of Control.

A police officer said the Pakistan Army confirmed on August 4 that Zaffar’s body had been found. The Indian Army sent across a message through a hotline for the return of the body.

Zaffar’s body was handed over to the Indian Army at the Chakan-Da-Bagh crossing point on Saturday. The body was later handed over to his family.
