The army on Saturday claimed to have foiled a cross-border attack by Pakistan’s Border Action Team in the Keran sector of Kupwara and killed “5 to 7 Pak regulars/terrorists”.

According to the army, the Border Action Team is made up of militants assisted by the Pakistani army. The reference to “5 to 7” killed suggests the bodies have not been retrieved.

An army statement said four “hardcore” Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists had been killed since Friday morning. It said sniper rifles, explosive devices and mines with Pakistani markings were seized, which “clearly indicates complicity of Pak(istan) in terror activities”.

Colonel Rajesh Kalia, the defence spokesperson, said Pakistan had made several attempts to disturb peace in the Valley and target Amarnath pilgrims.

Kashmir’s borders and hinterland have been tense since the Centre rushed thousands of additional troops to the Valley in recent days.

An escalation in cross-border firing killed a woman and injured several in the Gurez sector of Kashmir on Thursday.
