An under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar’s Supaul on Friday, killing one person and injuring 10 others.
One worker was killed when a large section of an under-construction bridge over the Kosi river collapsed on Friday morning when work was going in full swing. Several more were feared trapped under the debris. Huge concrete spans of the bridge suddenly subsided.
“This bridge is being built over the Kosi river between Madhubani and Supaul districts as part of the Bharatmala project (of the Centre). We got information at around 7.30am that the girders put up between the 25th and 26th spans of the bridge has collapsed,” Supaul district magistrate Kaushal Kumar said.
“We launched an operation and rescued 11 people. One of them has died while the rest are injured. The injured are admitted to Lifeline Mithila Hospital and Surya Hospital. The doctors treating them have said that the injuries are minor and they all are out of danger,” Kaushal added.
A team of the National Disaster Response Force has also reached the site.
Deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, who is also the road construction department minister, said: “An investigation has been ordered and strict action will be taken against those found responsible for the incident.”
