Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday expressed the fear that another of his ministers would be arrested soon.
Days after the Enforcement Directorate arrested health minister Satyendar Jain in connection with a money laundering case, the anti-corruption branch, which is under the administration of the lieutenant governor, has begun probing a three-year old plaint by Delhi BJP spokesman Harish Khurana against deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia.
Kejriwal, who is also the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) national convener, said: “He (Sisodia) is the pioneer of India’s education revolution, he is perhaps the best education minister of independent India…. Will all the central agencies keep wasting our time by filing cases one by one against us? How will we be able to work like this? Mr Prime Minister, I request you to arrest all of us at once and get done with your investigations so we can get back to work without hindrances.”
He added: “You arrested Shri Satyendar Jain who was working on cleaning the Yamuna, increasing the number of mohalla clinics in Delhi and supplying drinking water to every household 24x7. Now the progress of these projects will get hindered.”
In 2019, Khurana, the son of former Delhi chief minister Madan Lal Khurana of the BJP, complained to the ACB that Sisodia and Jain committed a scam in the construction of school buildings to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore.
On Thursday, the AAP released a letter from the ACB to Khurana sent last week asking him for evidence. All of Jain’s portfolios, which include health, were transferred to Sisodia although the former remains a minister.
AAP MLA Atishi Marlena said: “Why was no investigation in this matter carried out in the last three years? This is because these agencies are aware that no corruption of any form can be found over here….
“Between 2012 and 2020, more than 140 cases have been filed by the central government on 52 legislators from the AAP…. But until now, in not even one of these cases against AAP legislators, the charges have been proved.”
Khurana responded to Marlena with a tweet: “How much does a semi-permanent room cost @atishiaap? Well, whether the case is real or fake, only time will tell. But your fear shows something is fishy.”
In 2020, officer on special duty Gopal Krishna Madhav, who was posted in Sisodia’s office, was arrested by the CBI for corruption, a move that the minister supported.
Sisodia had been questioned by the ACB over recruitments in the Delhi Commission for Women. However, nothing came of the case.
