On April Fool’s Day, the Congress attempted a sardonic jab at the BJP by bringing out a mock manifesto for a Bharatiya Jumla Party whose symbol is a lotus, but upside down.
The spoof manifesto promises to 'fudge data and hide reports' and claims to have launched the 'first ever WhatsApp University'. It is titled 'Ek Bharat Berozgar Bharat (One India, Unemployed India)'.
The manifesto used the Congress’s oft-used refrain 'chowkidar chor hai (the watchman is the thief)' and gave hope that 'achchhe din' would come 'kabhi na kabhi (some day or the other)'. 'Achchhe din aane wale hain (good days are about to come)' was the BJP’s hugely popular 2014 slogan. Tellingly, 'kabhi na kabhi' was mentioned in a much smaller font size than 'achchhe din'.
The cover page of the manifesto has a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi making a gesture with his fingers that imply quotation marks. On March 27, Modi had announced the success of Mission Shakti on national television and made this gesture while speaking about the anti-satellite missile mission.
A section titled 'Modi vision for India', includes 'dictatorship over democracy', 'oppression of minorities', and 'hopeless unemployed youth', among others. Summing up the last five years of BJP rule, the manifesto claims that the party gave India its 'first ever PM' as there was 'no history of independent India before him'.
The manifesto also calls minister of finance Arun Jaitley the 'first ever blog minister' and claims that the BJP has 'appointed spokespersons to dismiss concerns & pass the blame on Nehru'.
