In a somber moment for Tamil Nadu, the renowned actor and founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Vijayakanth, passed away today at the age of 71. Widely known as the 'Captain,' Vijayakanth's journey encompassed both the film industry and politics, earning him the endearing title 'Karuppu MGR' from his fans, acknowledging his generosity and charisma.

Condolences flooded social media as political leaders and fellow actors expressed their grief and paid tribute to the influential personality.

Home Minister Amit Shah took to Twitter to share his sentiments, saying, "Deeply saddened to learn about the passing of DMDK leader and respected film veteran Vijayakanth Ji. Affectionately referred to as the captain, Vijaykanth Ji inspired patriotism among people both through his onscreen and offscreen roles. My heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti Shanti."

Rahul Gandhi expressed his sorrow, stating, "Deeply saddened by the demise of DMDK founder, Thiru Vijayakanth ji. His contributions to cinema and politics have left an indelible mark on the hearts of millions. My heartfelt condolences to his family and fans during this difficult time."

Union Minister Piyush Goyal shared, "Deeply saddened by the demise of DMDK leader and film veteran Vijayakanth ji. Fondly called as Captain, he was an iconic actor and beloved leader, who successfully traversed the world of cinema and public life leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu politics. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti."

Mourning the loss, actor Mohanlal tweeted, "Peace be unto the soul of a great actor, a just politician, and a kind human being - Vijayakanth sir. My heart goes out to his family, friends, fans, and everyone who shares the pain of his loss. Om Shanti."

Actor Chiranjeevi expressed his grief, saying, "Heartbroken to know that our ‘Puratchi Kalingar,’ ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth is no more. He was a wonderful human being, Hero of the Masses, a multi-faceted personality, and an astute politician. Our beloved ‘Captain’ has left us too soon leaving an irreplaceable void! My heartfelt condolences to his numerous fans, family, and well-wishers. May his soul rest in peace."

Joining the tributes, actor Jr NTR shared, "Saddened to learn about Vijayakanth Garu's passing. A true powerhouse in both cinema and politics. May his soul find eternal peace. My thoughts are with his family and friends."

DK Shivakumar, Karnataka Congress President, extended his condolences, remarking, "The demise of actor and DMDK Chief Captain #Vijayakanth brings the curtain down on an illustrious career and an even more glorious human being and performer, who was loved by thousands of fans. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fans in this difficult time. May the departed soul rest in peace."

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday announced full state honours for the DMDK founder-leader Vijayakanth's funeral following a heartfelt note. Sharing some photos, he wrote on X, "I paid my last respects to my dear friend - National Progressive Dravidian Association President Captain Vijayakanth... When he was ill, I visited him twice and wanted him to get well soon. Nature is mercilessly taking my friend's life."

The actor, who had been battling illness for the past 4-5 years, maintained a low profile during this time. His demise marks the end of an era, leaving a significant void in both the cinematic and political realms of Tamil Nadu. Vijayakanth, a prominent figure, had ventured into politics with the aim of providing an alternative to the dominant Dravidian parties, DMK and AIADMK.
