Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) has urged the National Commission for Women (NCW) and Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) to take up the investigation into the alleged gang rape of a 34-year-old woman in Delhi.
Chairperson of OSCW, Dr Minati Behera, told The Telegraph: “We have urged the two statutory bodies to investigate the issue. This is a shameful incident, and all need to rise up to condemn it. Besides writing a letter to them, I even talked to the senior officials of these two statutory bodies. All of them assured me they would do a proper investigation and submit a report within 15 days.”
According to the direction of chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, inspector-general of police (IG), Crime Against Women and Children Wing (CAW and CW), S. Shyni reached New Delhi on Tuesday to review the progress of the investigation into the alleged rape case.
The victim, a nursing graduate, is undergoing treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi. She was found in a semi-conscious state at Sarai Kale Khan in New Delhi on the intervening night of October 10 and
October 11.
Director-general of police (DGP) Y.B. Khurania also discussed the issue with the Delhi police commissioner (CP) on Monday and sought help in resolving the case and apprehending the suspects accused of allegedly gang-raping a 34-year-old woman
in Delhi.
A case has already been registered under sections 70(1) (gang rape) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
The Odisha government is in touch with the AIIMS and taking updates about her health status. The senior IPS officer S Shyni is scheduled to meet the AIIMS authorities and assured the authorities of Odisha government’s all support for the treatment
of the victim.
Director general of police (DGP), YB Khurnia, in a statement, said: “The incident regarding sexual assault of an Odia girl at Delhi is being followed up with seriousness and sensitivity. Odisha Police is in touch with the family members of the survivor and are also following up progress of investigation with
Delhi Police.”
The statement said: “Arrangement has been made to facilitate movement of family members from Bhubaneswar to Delhi. All necessary steps are being
taken.”
The incident has sparked outrage in the state, with the principal Opposition party, BJD, criticising the government for its failure to come to the rescue of the 34-year-old woman.
BJD Rajya Sabha member, Manas Mangaraj, wrote on X: “Shocking brutality in Delhi! An Odia Woman gangraped in the National Capital 3 days ago on the eve of Dussehra, stranded on the streets; and later admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre. Call it negligence or apathy, the Odisha Government has turned a blind eye to the plight of distressed woman and seems to be busy
in holidays.”
He added: “The CM is visiting Puja Pandals, but has no time to make a statement on Odia Asmita being brutally assaulted in Delhi. Ironically, the Resident Commissioner’s office in Delhi has also maintained a stoic silence on this matter. This is very unfortunate. Hope good sense prevails and the woman is taken
care of.”
