Balasore police on Sunday arrested a man for allegedly killing a minor girl by setting her on fire after she resisted his rape attempt.

The incident took place at Bairingia village in Balasore district on Sunday.

Dayanidhi Jena, 28, is a farmer. According to reports, Dayanidhi had a one-sided love affair with the 14-year-old girl of his village. The student used to go to Dayanidhi’s house for taking tuition from his wife.

On Sunday morning, while the girl was going to a shop passing by his house, Dayanidhi asked her to come in. Then he forcibly took her to the bathroom and tried to rape her. When she resisted, Dayanidhi poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.

Hearing her screams, the neigbours rushed to the spot and found her dead.

They then beat up Dayanidhi and handed him over to the police.
