Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday said the state government is considering a proposal to give pensions to the family members of freedom fighters from Odisha under the "Kutumba Yojana".
However, the modalities for implementing the scheme are yet to be worked out.
Addressing a meeting on Friday, the August Kranti Day, which marks the anniversary of the Quit India Movement, Majhi said: “The long-standing demand of the family members of the freedom fighters will be given a top priority. We will soon frame modalities on the issue.”
The chief minister said: “Today, another Kranti (freedom struggle) is going to be held in Odisha. It's about preserving Odia pride (Odia Asmita). Keeping the Odia Asmita into consideration, the BJP government has begun a new journey.”
Majhi recalled how the freedom struggle spread all over Odisha under the able leadership of sons of soil like late Harekrushna Mahatab, Biswanath Das, Acharya Harihara and many others. He also recalled the sacrifices of Laxman Nayak and Madho Singh for the cause of the state and freedom struggle.
Majhi also said Odisha plans to observe the centenary of its formation of statehood in 2036 in a big way. “Vikashit India and Vikashit Odisha are our aims. We are working towards achieving this goal,” said Majhi.
Minister of law Prithviraj Harichandan and minister of Odia language, literature and culture Suraj Suryabanshi also spoke on the occasion and recalled Odisha’s contribution towards the freedom struggle.
