A doctor posted in the Maoists-infested Malkangiri district was allegedly kidnapped by unidentified persons late on Saturday night. The doctor identified as Amlan Kumar Bhoi was posted at Kalimela Community Health Centre, about 600kms from the capital. He was abducted from his official quarters. Police suspect the involvement of Maoists.
Today, the victim's parents met senior police officials and sought their help.
Police have started an investigation by examining the CCTV footage. They have seized some posters and a letter suspected to be written by the doctors from the doctors' quarter. While the locals suspect it's an act of the Maoists, Police remain tight-lipped on the issue.
Locals said Dr. Bhoi had picked up a quarrel with locals about the postmortem of a deceased. The locals were not satisfied with Dr. Bhoi’s efforts and they did not want the postmortem of the body.
Chief Medical Officer (CDMO), Malkangiri, Dr. Prafulla Nanda told The Telegraph: “We have lodged an FIR with the police. We suspect the involvement of Maoists in the kidnapping of the young doctor.”
Nanda said, “Amlan joined the service in January this year. He is unmarried. Two days back, a few people came with a lady to the hospital for treatment. But she was already dead. As per the law, the doctor had to do the postmortem. The people did not agree to the postmortem and later picked up a quarrel with the doctor. As the doctor insisted, the postmortem was done and the family members took the body later.”
The CDMO further added, “The 36-year-old lady, though married in the Kalimela area, belongs to the Sukuma area of Chhattisgarh, which is known for Maoist activities. Though we are unsure of Maoists' involvement in this case, we suspect it. Let the police investigate the matter.”
