Odisha police have detained an Army Major on the charges of assaulting four policemen inside a police station here.
The Major has been identified as Gurubant Singh, posted with the 22 Sikh regiment in Calcutta.
Sources said some miscreants misbehaved with the Major and his girlfriend while returning home after dinner. They immediately rushed to the police station at Bharatpur on the outskirts of the city, lodged a verbal complaint with the police, and urged them to rush to the spot and catch the culprits involved in the alleged misbehaviour before they fled.
However, police personnel insisted that, as per the law, the complainant should first file a report. Apprehending that the culprits would flee the spot, the Major insisted that the police rush to the spot first, and he would lodge the complaint later. Sources said it led to an altercation.
Infuriated over the police behaviour, the Major allegedly attacked police inside the police station and in the process four constables sustained injuries. Police also said a female sub inspector was allegedly bitten by the Major’s girlfriend. A case has been registered in this connection.
The Major has been sent for a medical test. The police alleged that Singh was in an inebriated state.
