All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, plans to join hands with Chang Gung University, Taiwan, over the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for better health care management and patient care.

“To provide emergency treatment, early detection of disease is much more important. But in the case of cancer or brain stroke when a patient is admitted to the emergency department of a hospital, it has always been a challenging task to provide the patient with the required emergency treatment. Hence, applications of AI in medical data analysis for disease prediction is the need of the hour,” said AIIMS Bhubaneswar executive director Prof Ashutosh Biswas.

After a meeting with Prof. Prasan Kumar Sahoo, a professor in the information engineering department and director of the artificial intelligence department, Chang Gung University, Biswas said: “We will find out modalities to join hands with the prestigious university for research and training programmes on AI and its use in the field of diagnosis, therapeutics and management of patient care.”

Prof Sahoo said: “Huge volumes of images and clinical data are generated when a cancer or brain stroke patient is admitted to the emergency department of a hospital. Doctors may use varieties of images such as Histopathological, Computed Tomography, Computed Tomographic Angiography and Magnetic Resonance Image for disease diagnosis. Those collected images are highly unstructured. Deep learning is part of AI that mimics the workings of the human brain in analysing different formats of image data for use in classifying, localising, detecting, and segmenting the medical images.”

He said: “AI is useful to analyse the ischemic stroke, intracranial artery stenosis, colorectal cancer and lungs cancer patient’s images data for automatic prediction of the diseases. Collaborating with AIIMS Bhubaneswar for more research on AI will be a great thing for Chang Gung University.”

Berhampur University khadi nudge

Berhampur University, one of the leading universities of Odisha, has asked all its employees to wear khadi dress every Friday during office hours to promote the cause of khadi.

The order states: “In connection with the observance of best practices, the vice-chancellor has been pleased to take the initiative for wearing khadi clothes at least one day per week, i.e. on every Friday, to create awareness for nationality/patriotism/unity and integrity among all the employees of the university. Hence all the employees (both teaching and non-teaching) are requested to wear Khadi dress/ saree on every Friday during office hours. This new vision and mission will be started in this university with effect from 10th February 2023.”

Vice-chancellor, Berhampur University, Prof Geeetanjali Dash told The Telegraph: “It’s a symbolic gesture on the part of the university to promote the cause of khadi. It will benefit the weavers’ community too.”
