The Koraput district has been badly hit by the rainfall triggered by the cyclonic storm Michaung.

Local police sub-inspector Y.S. Majhi told The Telegraph: “Benudhar’s father Laxman Mandal, 65, died on Tuesday at Koraput. Following his death, the family members brought him to the village for cremation on Tuesday night. His son Benudhar died on Wednesday morning.”

Laxman Mandal died while undergoing treatment at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital at Koraput, about 70km from his village.

According to sources, as rain lashed the area, the relatives found it tough to arrange wood for the cremation of Laxman at the village. Benudhar was also trying to collect wood from the backyard of his house. However, a branch which was half-broken because of the cyclonic storm fell on his head all of a sudden. The son lost consciousness on the spot. Later he was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors.

Ahom burial for heritage list

New Delhi: The mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam has been submitted as India’s nomination for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List for the year 2023-24, the Centre informed the Parliament on Thursday.

The unique burial mounds, represented by pyramid-like structures known as ‘moidams’, were used by the Tai-Ahom dynasty which ruled for around 600 years in Assam.

Union minister for culture and tourism G. Kishan Reddy shared information about the nomination in response to a query in the Rajya Sabha.

He was asked whether the government has finalised India’s nomination for consideration as World Heritage site for the year 2023-24 and the rationale behind the selection of sites for nominations.

In his written reply to the question, Reddy said: “The nomination dossier of ‘Group of Moidams-The Mound Burial System of the Ahom Dynasty’ has been submitted as India’s nomination for the year 2023-24.”
