Activists of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Meghalaya on Saturday checked vehicles coming from Assam after the final NRC list was made public in the neighbouring state on Saturday.

The KSU has demanded that the Meghalaya government carry out an exercise similar to the NRC to weed out “infiltrators”.

“At the entry points along the Meghalaya-Assam border in the Khasi-Jaintia hills region — where the state government has infiltration checkpoints — KSU members kept vigil while police personnel checked any possible entry of those who have been left out of the NRC list,” KSU general secretary Donald V. Thabah said.

He said that in East Jaintia Hills district, the union had deputed its members from the Khliehriat and Narpuh circles to Rattacherra and Umtyrwa infiltration checkgates to “weed out Bangladeshi infiltrators” in view of the publication of the NRC.

KSU members were also deputed in Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya to keep vigil, Thabah said. “The government should take steps to strengthen vigil in the border areas to ensure that the infiltrators do not enter Meghalaya.”

The appeal was made after more than 19 lakh people did not find their names in the final list of the NRC in Assam.

“As Meghalaya shares a long boundary with Assam and in the absence of stringent laws against infiltration in Meghalaya, there is an apprehension that these 19 lakh people could enter our state,” Thabah said.

The KSU also suggested the government set up temporary checkpoints along the border areas and send police reinforcements in the infiltration checkgates to stop any possible entry of infiltrators.
